What is
Vanity Publishing?
Many people consider
self-publishing and vanity publishing as one in
the same. However, this is not so, as vanity
publishing is as its name implies and is when a
publisher establishes a contract with an author
regardless of the quality or marketability
of the work. Many times, these publishers appeal
to the authors' vanity of being a published
author. Vanity publishers and make their money
from the exorbitant fees they charge for
publishing services. In many instances it is up
to the author to distribute, market, and promote
the work
Authors who are more interested in being
published than in profiting from their works are
more liable to fall victim to fraud. Therefore,
it is very important that when dealing with any
vanity press the authors knowingly understand
any and all contractual agreements before they
willingly enter into any agreements with
a vanity publisher.
