What is the Slush
pile?
The slush pile is the
never-ending pile of unsolicited manuscripts
that publishers receive daily that were sent
directly to them either by overly sanguine
authors, or by agents who are not known to the
publisher. It is estimated that publishers
receive more than 1,000 manuscripts daily, for
this reason many publishing companies do not
accept unsolicited manuscripts any longer.
Many of the submissions are unfortunately poorly
written, and are usually rejected by the reader
before they have finished the first page.
Another reason why a manuscript may be rejected
is because the first page does not 'hook' the
reader.
Other reason could be that
the author did not research the publisher
correctly to know what genre they publish. If a
book is submitted that is in a genre, not
accepted by the publisher
the manuscript will be rejected. The same holds
true for any manuscript that fails to meet the
publisher's criteria. Approximately less than 1%
of the manuscripts in the slush pile will be
considered for publication, of that number, and
less than
one in a thousand are published.
