The Science Fiction Novel
Science fiction is the
literary genre in which part of the story
depends on the impact of science that may
actually exist or be imaginary and creates the
setting for the story. Though the term "Science
Fiction" has only been around since the
1930s, however some would argue that the science
fiction story has been around since
Shakespeare's The Tempest, while other argue
that it was Mary Shelley's Gothic novel
Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus written
in 1818 that gave rise to the modern science
fiction novel.
In 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson wrote The
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, in both
Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde, science is a
significant part of the stories, and both are
early examples of a standard science fiction
theme, which is the obsessed
scientist/civilization whose discoveries or
creations bring about the downfall of the
scientist/civilization.
Many science fiction novels also deal with the
theme of the great hopes individuals place in
science as well as their fears concerning the
drawbacks of technological development, such as
in Isaac Asimov's Robot series. These are not
the only storylines covered by science fiction.
H.G. Wells and Jules Verne wrote about space
travel, unknown technology, time travel, alien
encounters, as well as atomic warfare.
