About Publisher
Scams
This possibly the most
popular scam, where countless desperate writers
respond to an ad proclaiming "New Publishing
House, or Wanted manuscripts, Become an Instant
Published Writer, etc.
These are usually seen in
the back of a writer's magazine
or guide. These publishers usually require that
the writer to pay a reading fee, a printing fee,
a whatever fee. NO REPUTABLE PUBLISHER WILL
CHARGE TO PUBLISH YOUR
BOOK!
There are publishing companies that use very
sophisticated scams called co-op publishing, or
joint venture publishing. Just like reputable
publishers, these co-op publishers print and
market your book, and pay royalties on the
sales, however, the writer must make an equal
contribution to the production costs. With a
reputable publisher, you will not be asked to
make an equal contribution. This so-call
contribution, many times turns out to cost more
than the entire printing process. Unfortunately,
the writer often never finds this out.
Sadly, these crooked-publishers are also
appearing on the Internet, offering promises of
electronic publication for a minimal setup-fee
and of course, the monthly "maintenance"
fees.
Scammers will go to any lengths to attack and
lure unsuspecting writers. Some scammers use
names that are similar to ligament publishers.
Others claim they have the ability
to be able to post electronic books on the
websites of the major bookstores. Remember, if
the publisher charges you to publish and market
your book they are not legitimate.
It is important for you to know that co-op
publishing, and scam-publishers are not the same
as self-publishing, which is a ligament
alternative, for some writers, especially for
"specialty" books such as a collection of grade
school pomes and
stories, or a collection of family stories.
However, if you use self-publishing, make sure
that you do research thoroughly the publisher
and make sure that you do your
comparison-shopping.
