The term print run or press
run
The term print run or
press run usually applies to book publishing,
and is not often in the magazine market. The
print run is the number of copies that are to be
printed of an impending book, which will be
commercially marketed.
Because publishers want to recover a large
portion of the book's initial costs during sales
of the books first print run, publishers will
use several commercial and logistic
factors to calculate the number of books in the
print run.
For book collectors, the first print run copy is
the generally the most valuable, especially if
it is a first edition because as more and more
print runs are printed, the printing plates
often deteriorate slightly.
Once the print run sells out then the title
either will be reprinted, or will become an
out-of-print book. However, many publishers are
using print on demand as well as e-book
technologies, publishers can keep well beloved
titles in print.
