1942 Simon and Schuster publishers. The original
twelve titles were:
- Three Little Kittens
- Bedtime Stories
- Mother Goose
- Prayers for Children
- The Little Red Hen
- Nursery Songs
- The Alphabet from A
to Z
- The Poky Little Puppy
- Baby's Book of
Objects
- The Golden Book of
Fairy Tales
- The Animals of Farmer
Jones
- This Little Piggy and
Other Counting Rhymes
The Little Golden Books
originally sold for 25¢ and sold in not only
bookstores, but also department stores and other
chains. Within five months of their release
approximately 1.5 million copies of Little
Golden Books had been printed, and were
into their third print run.
In 1992, the golden anniversary of the Little
Golden Books it was estimated that over a
billion and a half had been sold. Although the
Little Golden Books have changed in details over
the last 60 years, they have maintained a
distinctive appearance.
If you compared a copy of
The Poky Little Puppy purchased in 1942 and one
purchased today, both would be easily recognized
as Little Golden Books.
Today, the original twelve titles have expanded
to include some favorite children's icons
including The Muppets, Disney, Barbie, Power
Rangers, etc. Over the past six decades, such
icons as Hopalong Cassidy, Cheyenne, Lassie, Rin
Tin Tin, Captain
Kangaroo, and Mister Rogers, have appeared in
Little Golden Books. However many of the old
titles still remain in print today.
