Horror Fiction Novels
Horror fiction is a genre,
which is intended to frighten, unsettle, or
horrify the reader. Generally, the horror of the
story is often the presence of evil, rather as a
spirit, or a supernatural being. Occasionally,
this allege evil is a misunderstood,
supernatural element such as an Alien who is
only seeking a new place to live.
Since the 1960s, fictional
works that contain the morbid, gruesome,
surreal, or frightening theme has been labeled
as horror. Many times, horror fiction overlaps
other genres such as science fiction, fantasy,
and even mystery/suspense.Because of this,
science fiction, fantasy, horror fiction,
supernatural fiction,
alternate history, and magic realism have all
sometimes been placed under the umbrella
category of speculative fiction.
From the earliest writings, heroes and fictional
characters have found themselves in horrific
situations from Beowulf, to characters in the
Brother Grimm's fairy tales and in such works as
Bram Stoker's Dracula and Edgar Allan Poe's Fall
of the
House of Usher. Writers of early horror literary
works used the setting, mood, and subtlety to
create the feel of otherworldly flavor and
seldom used extensive explicit violence, but
rather alluded to the violence.
Poe and H.P. Lovecraft are widely viewed as
masters of horror.
Other great horror writers
include M.R. Jones who wrote classic English
ghost stories. As with Lovecraft and Poe, James
also avoided shock effects. However, many modern
writers of horror
have resorted to graphic description of extreme
violence in order to shock, entertain, or convey
the feel of horror to their audiences. This tend
to glorify the violence in the story has
unfortunately given horror fiction a stigma by
many as lacking
any literary merit. However, there are such
contemporary writers as Dean Koontz and Stephen
King who are capable of creating the sense of
horror without the excessive violence, which is
characteristic in much of the current mainstream
writings of
this genre.
