Fantasy Literature Involves
Magic or Other Supernatural Powers
Fantasy is a genre that
usually involves the magic or other supernatural
forms and can take place in mythical or
imaginary worlds as the backdrop of the plot,
theme, or setting. A popular example would be J.
R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and his The
Lord of the Rings trilogy. The fantasy genre is
distinguishable from the science fiction and
horror genre by its overall theme, despite the
fact that the three do overlap.
Fantasy, as with other forms of speculative
fiction, involves actions and events that cannot
occur in reality. In many instances, these
actions and events are explained by means of
divine intervention, magic, or other
supernatural forces such as the case in the
popular Harry Potter series. In works of
fantasy, the entire story might take place in a
fantasy world completely different from our own.
In these worlds, their laws of nature may permit
magic, or even permit dinosaurs to exist and
evolve to the point of speech as in the popular
novel series Dinotopia by James Gurney.
In fantasy, one main characteristic that defines
the genre is that the story's setting often
differs from our own universe as a result of
magic or other abnormal phenomena. This
principle is often seen in children's literature
such as the works written by Dr. Seuss. However,
many consider children's literature as a
completely separate genre from fantasy.
The fantasy genre began perhaps with the Epic of
Gilgamesh and the earliest written documents
known to man. Whenever fantasy began, its
elements of mythic events, and other magical
elements have define fantasy as well as its
subgenres and established some of fantasy's most
celebrated works as literary classics.
These works include:
The Odyssey, Beowulf, the Arthurian Legends, as
well as many fairy tales.
In fact, any literary work
that includes fantastical adventures, brave
heroes and or heroines, deadly monsters, magical
creatures and beings as well as mysterious
realms are fantasies.
Even before Homer pinned the Odyssey, popularity
of the fantasy genre was already firmly set, and
has continued to increase even today. The
evidenced of this can be seen by the
best-selling status of the Harry Potter series,
as well as with Brian Jacques's Redwall series
and the film adaptations of the Lord of the
Rings trilogy.
As long as mankind has an
imagination and dreams of mistrial reams, the
fantasy genre will remain popular.
