About Contest Scams
This scam has been around
since I was a child, in other word a very long
time. In this scam, unscrupulous publishers have
contest where the winner receives either a cash
prize or publication. So where is the scam? It
is in the entry fees that
hundreds of thousand of unsuspecting writers pay.
There are ligament contest, however. There are
several writer organizations, such Romance
Writers of American who sponsor the RITA award,
which is the highest honor for authors in the
genre of romance fiction. In addition, several
reputable publishers have had contests,
especially if they were lurching a new line.
When publishers and ligament organizations hold
contest, if there is an entry fee, it is often
very reasonable ranging from approximately $25
to $45 for non-members.
The best way not to become a victim of a
publishing scam is to be informed. The best way
to get the information you need is to join a
writing organization. In addition, if
victimized, please inform the organization.
Trust me, your name is usually kept
confidential. The only way to stop the scammers
is to educate writers.
In closing I would like to say that the Science
Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America website
has possible the most thorough scam-alert
sections. Please visit their
website at: sfwa.org
