Don't Become a
Victim of a Scam!
I wish that twelve years
ago someone had given me this information. It
would have saved me $10,000 and a lot of
disappointment as well as feeling like the
biggest fool in the world. However, last year I
attended a writer's retreat, and soon discovered
that I wasn't the only person who had been taken
for a fool. I met five other individuals who in
their early writing careers been taken as well.
Therefore, if this article helps one
unsuspecting writer, then it has served its
purpose. In this article, I hope to educate any
and all writers about the more common scams in
hopes that they will not fall victim.
About Agent Scams
Because an increasing number of
publishers will not accept any material that is
not submitted by an agent, and many reputable
agents are only taking on authors who already
have a good publishing record.
About Referral-Scams
The agent loved my story and I was going to be
the next Stephen King! However, my story needed
to be "polished", she then referred me to an
editing service (aka book doctors).
Editing Services and Book
Doctors
Unfortunately, this is a scam that sponges off
of legitimate professionals. There are several
reputable free-lance editors who will help you
polish a manuscript.
Publisher Scams
This possibly the most popular scam, where
countless desperate writers respond to an ad
proclaiming "New Publishing House, or Wanted
manuscripts, Become an Instant
Published Writer, etc.
About Contest Scams
This scam has been around since I was a child,
in other word a very long time. In this scam,
unscrupulous publishers have contest where the
winner receives either a cash prize or
publication.
